Meanwhile, Down in Hempstead
Hit the road, Chad
by: Gregory Gethard
I'm killing time in the dreadfully quiet media room of Giants Training Camp, which is the perfect time to write about the really interesting training camp going on down in Long Island. ESPN actually broadcast a piece about how Brett Favre had to run a lap after fumbling a snap from center. Newsday wrote an article about one pass he threw in practice, which has made Jets fans continue their post-Favre hysteria.
From The Cockpit:
I have been encouraged by all the reports coming out of Hofstra. Favre has made some head-turning throws over his first three practices. Before he came to this team, you simply never read about Jerricho Cotchery catching a 75-yard touchdown on a pass that was in the air for 60 yards, or him catching a frozen rope for a 40-yard gain. Favre was capable enough today to lead the first string offense to a touchdown in an end of practice game simulation. There will obviously be some rust and an adjustment period, but by the time Miami comes around, Favre should have a good enough handle on the offense to lead the Jets.
Seriously, I understand the excitement. But people need to get some Deepak Chopra tapes and put this in perspective. Favre threw a nice pass in a practice where he wore a red shirt, indicating he was not to be tackled under any circumstances.
In other J-E-T-S related news, Chad Pennington will wear aquamarine and white next season after signing a contract with Miami. It's always a good time when a longtime player gets dumped by his club and ends up playing for a fierce division rival.
From The Jets Blog:
As many of you know, I hopped off the Pennington bandwagon a bit earlier than most Jets fans. However, it is still going to kill me to see him wearing a Dolphins uniform. I can't say enough for Pennington. He did lead us to the playoffs three out of five seasons and showed tremendous leadership ability to compliment his very accurate arm and knowledge of the game.
I can't wait to see the response he receives from the Jets fans when he returns to the Meadowlands on December 28th for the final week of the season. It may have been easier to boo him in the past couple of seasons while he was a Jet out of frustration, but regardless of the outcome, he always left it all on the field and gave it his all for the Jets for eight seasons. I sure hope he gets the respect he deserves.
Chad's had his share of downs, but for the most part he was a pretty darn good quarterback when he wasn't playing through horrific shoulder injuries. Sure, the guy throws with the velocity of a rec-league softball pitcher. But he always knew how to manage a game. This might hurt a bit, Jets fans.
Good luck in Miami, Chad.
