On the Hardwood: Team USA Makes Statement Over Spain
Redeem Team has eyes on gold
One-by-one, they arrived on the court before the game, getting ready to write the next installment of their gold medal mission. The look in their eyes gave spectators the vibe they were ready to dominate. And their play confirmed it.
Every facet of Team USA's 119-82 win over Spain Saturday could be summed up with one word: Dominating.
The defense was so suffocating that Spain committed 28 turnovers and only shot 28 percent from the field.
The fastbreak points were 32-0 in favor of the US. This was indeed a message to all comers in Beijing.
"Statement game? I don't know. It means nothing. It means that we're 4-0, but we've got to continue to play better," LeBron James said after the win.
Play better? It would be hard for anyone to imagine that, especially with the balance we've seen thus far. It isn't one player, it's a combination of pieces that seem to be like a swiss army knife; they each do a little bit of everything.
Tayshaun Prince defends, Chris Paul accelerates, and Carmelo Anthony has shown a pulse for the first time since he led Syracuse to a National Championship in 2003.
The group has its eyes on the gold. After Saturday, who would doubt them?
