Poor Eli: Week 10
"Poor Eli" is a weekly compilation of quotes by both the media and fans about New York Giants quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.
Despite his recent success, negativity and doubt have followed Peyton's younger brother since the moment he was traded from the San Diego Chargers to the New York Giants on draft day of 2004. Regardless of what he does or how well he performs – even in a league that lives and dies by the motto, "What have you done for me lately?" – he is questioned and criticized.
In Week 9, Manning was a bit of a mixed bag. He threw three touchdown passes, but also turned the ball over three times. And while he compiled a 95.8 QB Rating, he didn't even reach 150 yards through the air. However, at the end of the day, he notched a win ... the most important statistic.
Unfortunately for Eli, three touchdowns, a victory and a solid QB Rating still isn't good enough to warrant a week off from the onslaught. And although it's becoming increasingly difficult for people to find something to criticize, that hasn't stopped them from nit-picking.
Bill Barnwell, ESPN
"Eli Manning's performance on Sunday was absolutely freaky ... Not freaky good or freaky bad, mind you – it's just strange that a quarterback could manage to have so many mitigating issues or excuses for both the good things and bad things he did."
Hazem Kiswani, Giants 101
"Eli Manning had three turnovers ... Can't do that."
Tom Rock, Newsday via Hartford Courant
"Some of the biggest miscues came from Eli Manning. He fumbled twice – once having it slip from his hands and once when stripped by DeMarcus Ware – and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown in the second quarter."
Mike Garafolo, The Star-Ledger
"I couldn't give QB Eli Manning a game ball on account of his two fumbles and his INT, which he said was his fault, not WR Plaxico Burress'."
Brad Pinkerton, The Sporting News
"Yes, Eli had three TD passes last week, but he also committed three turnovers against the Cowboys, who entered that game with just six takeaways all year. Now he'll face the Eagles, who have 15 takeaways and rank fourth in the league with 27 sacks. There could be a few more turnovers in the near future for Manning."
