Yankees Blog Roundup: Offseason Vol. 16
Will Andruw be the Yankees' next acquisition?
Win or lose, the offseason is always a crazy time for the New York Yankees. The team is looking to spend money in an effort to improve, while the fans bicker endlessly about potential free agent signees.
Here's what the Yankees online community is saying:
Mike A., River Ave. Blues
"(Mark Teixeira) still has to take and pass a physical first, and that could be accomplished Monday. Once the deal is official, the only pieces of the offseason puzzle left are Andy Pettitte and/or another back-end arm, and maybe a bench player or two."
Peter Abraham, The LoHud Yankees Blog
"The Dodgers have cut a financial deal with Andruw Jones that will lead to him getting traded or released ... The Yankees could use a center fielder. Jones is a five-time All-Star center fielder. So naturally many people have e-mailed wondering if the Yankees are interested ... Being that I'm on vacation, I have no idea. I haven't made any calls. But it's something Brian Cashman and his people have to at least consider."
Jeff, The Bronx Insider (via The LoHud Yankees Blog)
"I am so excited for the 2009 season to begin. I feel that the moves the Yankees have made so far, especially in the rotation, will make them a dominant teamfrom April through October. Long gone are the days that Sidney Ponson, Darrell Rasner, and Carl Pavano start three out of every five games. The Yankees are built to win."
Jscape2000, Pinstripe Alley
"Given A.J. Burnett's injury history and Joba (Chamerblain)'s innings cap, I don't see how the Yanks can enter the 2009 season without one more starting pitcher on the depth chart."
Kat O'Brien, On the Yankees Beat
"There are a lot of players left on the free agent market, considering we're in January already. I don't expect the Yankees to be too involved with these players, given all they've already done. Yet it will be interesting to see how things shake out with some players."
Greg Cohen, Sliding Into Home
"As for (Oliver) Perez, his walk numbers scare me, and besides two good years – '04 and '07 – he really hasn't done anything special pitching in the NL. In fact, he's been pretty awful. So why should the Yankees believe he will be any better in the AL? If anything he'll be worse. He's also never thrown more than 200 innings in a season and the one thing the Yankees need right now is a pitcher who can eat up innings, a workhorse. You know, someone like Andy Pettitte."
