Everything You Wanted to Know About Brett Favre: Post-Season
It's a pity party
by: Gregory Gethard
15,844 – That's the number of results my Google Reader pulled in for news articles on Brett Favre. Last week, that figure stood at 12,524.
Should we pity Brett Favre?
Brett is once again thinking of retiring. He says he hasn't thought about his future quite yet, but a torn biceps muscle doesn't bode well for another season.
I'm not the biggest Favre fan. I always thought he was a tad overrated. After all, he's thrown more interceptions than anyone in the history of the game. I resent the media attention he attracts, even though he has helped me pay my mortgage the past few months. And he was also a huge, if not the biggest, reason the Jets folded like elementary school paper down the stretch.
In the past few weeks, Favre has taken criticism from his teammates. Thomas Jones spoke out about the quarterback's shoddy play in the last few weeks of the season. And an anonymous teammate complained about Favre's alleged distance from the rest of his team.
But while I think Favre's been a product of extreme hype, I cannot deny his impact on the sport. The word most associated with Brett is "gunslinger." He certainly has been an entertaining player. He's won a Super Bowl. Packers Nation worships him like a deity. He's an iconic figure and no one can take that away from him.
So, for him to go out like this ... playing with Nickleback-level awfulness down the stretch, coupled with teammates dissing him in the media ... I guess Favre does deserve a little bit of pity. But just a little bit. After all, he's been lauded with uneding praise for most of his career. Pity's reserved for the truly deserving.
