Yankees Blog Roundup: Offseason Vol. 17
Too many men on the field?
Win or lose, the offseason is always a crazy time for the New York Yankees. The team is looking to spend money in an effort to improve, while the fans bicker endlessly about potential free agent signees.
Here's what the Yankees online community is saying:
Travis G., Pinstripe Alley
"There have been recent talks with other teams [about Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady], and one of the pair could be traded soon ... Between the two, I'd rather hold on to Swisher. Despite a lower batting average, he has a significantly better on-base percentage, is younger, a switch-hitter, and plays 1B (unlike Nady)."
Mike Axisa, On the Yankees Beat
"Swisher is a better on-base guy, a better defender, two years younger, a switch hitter, cheaper, and under control for two, possible three more seasons. Nady offers more batting average, and perhaps a shot at two draft picks if he leaves via free agency. Given that the Yanks could have three outfielders (Nady, Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui) leave via free agency after '09, it also seems prudent to hold onto Swisher."
Tyler Kepner, Bats Blog
"The Yankees must be the only team that can trade for a first baseman just before free agency begins, and then drop $180 million on a better one."
"Yes, we have a long way to go before the season begins, but all of this trade talk involving Nady & Swisher got us thinking. If one of these guys is traded, how bad is the Yankees' bench going to be? You're looking at a variation of Melky Cabrera/Brett Gardner, Jose Molina, and maybe Angel Berroa or Cody Ransom. Wow, that is horrid."
Joseph P., River Ave. Blues
"Humberto [Sanchez] was pretty damn terrible in the AzFL. He issued 11 walks, gave up 21 hits, and allowed 16 earned runs in just 12 innings. Oh yeah, and just four strikeouts. He has plenty to prove this year. It looks like the Yanks have already moved him to the bullpen, but I think you have to give him this one last chance to head into the season as a starter."
Tom Gaffney, The Bronx Block
"I was flipping around Pinstripes Plus on the Scout.com network today, searching for interesting Yankee stories and was shocked to see the Scout.com prospect rankings. Jesus Montero is the fifth ranked prospect in all of baseball! This is, by far, the highest I've seen a Yankee ranked by a major publication this year."
