Liberty Hoopla: Draft Prospect Profiles
Look out for these players
by: Nick DiPillo
Liberty fans, hope you're all doing well. Can you believe our season opener is less than five months away? I don't know about you, but I'm ready to get going today.
One of the things that is keeping us busy is evaluating prospects and preparing for the upcoming WNBA Draft. Although this draft may not have the same star power as last year's, there are quite a few players coming out who can have an impact in this league. I wanted to share with you my thoughts on a few of the top guards in this class. Here are a few of them, listed in alphabetical order:
She's a very unique talent for one of only two undefeated teams left in the country (I hope I didn't jinx them). At 6-foot-4, she possesses skills usually seen only in guards. She has a nice, efficient handle, good shooting stroke and gets to the rim very well. With her length and athleticism, she can also defend multiple positions. I'd expect her to be an extremely early selection in the draft.
One of two Maryland players who should go early in the first round, Coleman has a pro-ready body and a very big upside. She's a physical defender, an above-average rebounder for a guard and is extremely competitive. She also has the ability to score both inside and out. She'll be an immediate contributor to just about any team who selects her.
She's the leader of the best team in the country. A very high energy player who looks to score more than your average point guard, but when you're capable of shooting the ball the way she can, that's not a bad thing at all. She has a terrific work ethic, is a tremendous leader and will be an asset to whoever ends up with her.
A true point guard with ice water in her veins. She's an excellent passer with great vision and she has the ability to make everyone around her better. Also an excellent perimeter shooter, she's shooting over 45% from 3-point range this season. As was seen in their national championship run a few years ago, she's also very willing and able to knock down big shots.
A super athletic two-guard, who has really worked to improve her 3-point stroke. She wasn't a top-tier prospect coming out of high school, but her superior work ethic has pushed her to be one of the top guards in the country as a senior. She's very good in the open court and has a very nice mid-range game. She's capable of putting up very big numbers, just ask Florida, who she dropped 42 points on in December.
Next time I check in with you all, I'll share my thoughts about some of the post players in this upcoming draft.
Nick
