The Maven Responds (1/28)
Another nifty duo of questions
upstate tom: Stan, what is it with these players? Forty-some games have been played this season and you see players making comments on how they have to really get to the nitty grity and play hard every game to get their teams in good playoff posture. Shouldn't they have been doing that from the first game of the season? Are they all making that much money where they turn it on only when they see fit?
We, as fans, are expecting that for every game they play. Something tells me they just don't do enough to earn all the money they make and I'm sure this pertains to most but not all of the players. What's your take?
The Maven Responds: Dear upstate tom – Well, you and I agree on that. Too often I hear laments such as "We have to look in the mirror" or "We've got to play it simple." Simple? Just play hard on every shift.
Contemporary players have been spoiled by long-term contracts and getting money far beyond what they are worth. You have some skaters – Blair Betts, Zach Parise, et. al. – who do give you everything they've got. But there are malingerers because they can get away with it either because of contracts (Jason Spezza) or because the club can't find replacements. Thanks.
Ag: Does Tom Renney have a vendetta against Petr Prucha? He exemplifies everything Renney expects out of his team. Aaron Voros is awful.
The Maven Responds: Dear Ag, while it may seem as if Tom Renney does not have Petr Prucha as his Top Banana, I heartily doubt that there's anything remotely close to a vendetta. The coach wants a winning roster on the ice. The club IS winning. Voros was effective, in his way, against Carolina. I believe that Petr will work his way into the lineup again and be helpful. Your support for Prucha, one of my favorites, is exemplary. Thanks.
Hey guys, thanks for the great questions.
Sincerely,
The Maven
