Sharaud Curry, Providence Friar
Curry highlights solid roster
by: Gregory Gethard
Providence's Sharaud Curry brought the ball up the court. He looked to get an easy hoop, but his Rutgers defender stood in his path. He paused, and wisely let his team set up. His teammate fed the ball down low to a big man on the post. Providence's center faked a shot, but his opponent did not bite.
All along, Curry stood to the side watching the play develop. Once the ball was fed down low, he waited and waited, like a jungle snake ready to pounce on his prey. Curry's defender turned his head. Curry quietly moved a few steps to his left, so as not to tip off his poker hand.
His teammate saw Curry out of the corner of his eye. Curry received the bounce pass and didn't hesitate. He was in classic shooting position, his defender unable to make up the difference. Curry let fire with his shot. It rattled around the rim before falling through the net.
Three points, Friars.
Providence's entire roster plays like this. There are no stars on this team. It's a collection of no-name players who, together, rise up to the many challenges in Big East basketball. There are faster teams. There are stronger teams. But there aren't too many teams that play with this level of intelligence.
Flashy dunks make the highlight reels. But subtle movements are what win games. The slightest deceptions go a long way in basketball. And Providence's Sharaud Curry is a true master of disguise.
