Jonny Flynn: Flash and Dash
Syracuse's great guard
by: Gregory Gethard
Syracuse's Jonny Flynn slowly dribbled the ball up the court. His Orangemen were in a dogfight as Rutgers had crawled back into the game. The Scarlet Knights' faithful were loud and boisterous. Flynn knew something had to be done and went into action.
He eyed his defender. Then, with feet faster than Jackie Chan's, he darted to his left. It just took one blink of an eye, but Flynn was already past his opponent. But Rutgers' freshman Mike Rosario saw the play developing, coyly rotating over to stand in Flynn's path, setting his body in position to take a charge.
There was only one thing Flynn could do. And that's leap over Rosario.
Flynn took off on his right foot and propelled into the air. His knees became even with Rosario's shoulders as he hurdled over his foe. The ball, held in his right hand, was thrown through the hoop as if Zeus was firing lightning at earth. Rosario crumbled to the ground as Flynn stood over him, disdainfully shaking his head.
The play quieted the entire arena, save for Rutgers coach Fred Hill. He started yelling and screaming at the refs and was charged with a technical foul. After that, Rutgers didn't have a chance.
Flynn hadn't just made a great play. He made a play that completely unraveled his opponent.
Jonny Flynn plays with style. He plays with flair. He plays with panache.
But he also plays with ice water in his veins. When a dagger needs to be thrown through the chest of an opponent, he's the man to do the job.
