Meet Earl Clark, Cardinal King
This guy can soar
by: Gregory Gethard
Louisville's Earl Clark stood behind the three-point line. A pass came to him from the baseline, which he deftly caught. He held the ball for a brief second, then decided how to attack Notre Dame's defense.
After snatching the ball, it looked as if Clark had time to try a long-range bomb. But Clark realized that his defender was coming on quickly. Clark faked as if he was shooting, sending the Irishman attempting to guard him flying into the air.
Clark dribbled around his opponent. He then turned towards the hoop, which was blocked by a phalanx of Fighting Irish. He took two dribbles, using his quickness to spring himself away from the defense. Clark took two bunny hops, and was now a step or two past the free-throw line.
Clark held the ball high with his left hand and jumped off the ground. It looked like he would never come down. His legs kicked forward, and he threw the ball through the rim. He took a brief second to admire his tremendous work, and stared at the Notre Dame player who dared to impede his path.
This year's edition of the Louisville Cardinals are built in this fashion. They're a collection of good, skilled players. But the players are made better due to their incredible athleticism. It's a perfect storm of smarts, skill, speed and strength.
Clark sets the example. And his teammates follow with great aplomb.
