Bluelines: Sutter Aftermath
Thoughts on the former Devils coach
- Credit the Newark Star Ledger's Rich Chere for finding a Devil happy now that Brent Sutter went bye-bye. Brian Rolston puts it this way: "Whoever comes in, it'll be a different situation for me altogether. The fact of the matter is I didn't get a fair shake last year. Anybody who comes in will be a welcome change for me. I'm looking forward to coming back and getting an opportunity, regardless of who the coach is," says Rolston. "I just want an opportunity to do what I know I can do."
Quote of the Week by Islanders legend Denis Potvin regarding the Islanders' upcoming Draft pick: "I don't think you can look at it as just the defenseman over the forward. And as much as I appreciate the lovely words from old teammates, journalists and fans, you have to be careful with comparisons. There is no second coming of Bobby Orr, just as there is no second coming of Bryan Trottier."
- Here's what Canadian newsman Steve Macfarlane of the Sun Media thinks of the idea of Brent Sutter leaving New Jersey for the Flames coaching job, "Brent Sutter's character will be brought into question. Not just by New Jersey Devils fans, either. Rarely does someone who fails to honor the full length of a contract, then sign up for the same job with another employer, avoid a few stares of disgust. Even if that new employer happens to be your brother." Some NHL executives have reacted with revulsion over Sutter's perspective move. One tells us, "Brent should have never taken the Jersey job in the first place if he didn't plan on bringing his family with him."
- When John Tortorella took over the Blueshirts, Colton Orr often became the odd man out. Then again, Rangers General Manager Glen Sather may find a more gifted toughie on the market. Lou Lamoriello has a similar issue with his fighting free agent Mike Rupp.
- We hear that the following are realistic finalists for the Panthers GM opening: Craig Button, Craig Patrick, Denis Potvin, Pierre McGuire, and Mike Murphy.
- Our good wishes to old pal Ken Jonsson on his retirement from Swedish club Rogle.
- Good move by John Davidson signing Keith Tkachuk for another year.
