Latest on the Liberty in the offseason
by: New York Liberty
Baseball's in the final leg of the postseason. Men's basketball has JUST tipped off. And the ladies of the WNBA are continuing their exceptional play overseas.
October sure has been busy, but our video and scouting manager Catherine Proto helps us check in on the latest action from the offseason Libs before turning another page in our calendars.
Of the three games that Cathrine Kraayeveld's USK Praha had this week, they won all three, breaking the century mark in two of the contests. They beat Slovanka MB 116-71, and later in the week they beat Hradec Kralove 113-57.
Cat shot 3-for-4 from the field and 1-for-3 from long range, finishing with 10 points and five rebounds (four offensive).
In the 82-59 win against Karlovy Vary, she led the team in rebounds, grabbing 13 total.
- It was Erlana Larkins' first game of the season back in Turkey as her team, Mersin, defeated Fenerbahce 86-74. The victory got the Turkish club the President's Cup trophy. Mersin jumped out to an early lead, up 17 points at the half, and rallied behind Erl's 18 points and eight boards.
Mersin also defeated Kocaeli, 78-58, with seven points and eight rebounds from Erl.
- Sidney Spencer's Gorzow played two games this past week, winning both. In their first matchup versus Artego Bydg., Gorzow's offensive punch led them to a 104-60 win. Sid contributed 14 points, including three treys.
In the second game, the Polish squad continued its winning ways with one over Odra Brzeg, 64-62. Sidney added five points and five rebounds.
- Also in Poland, Shameka Christon put on a shooting clinic as she scored 25 points in the team's 81-63 win over Super-Pol. Meka shot 3-for-5 from the field and poured in six of seven three-pointers.
- Over in Russia, Janel McCarville's Spartak had their first look at FIBA action, as they hammered Galatasaray with a 92-59 victory in the inaugural SuperCup Women. Nelly aided in her team's win with 11 first-half points. She finished with 12 on 5-of-9 shooting and added five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
- The Libs' front-court duo of Tiffany Jackson and Kia Vaughn has also been on the winning track in Israel, with two close victories in the Israeli league.
Tiff's Maccabi Ramat Hen defeated Maccabi Tel Kabir, 88-83. She chipped in nine points and five boards. Kia's Electra Ramata Hasharon topped Maccabi Ashdod, 76-73. She posted her second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
- Leilani Mitchell's Arras continues to hold its position atop of the standings (2nd place) of the French league with a 5-1 record. Arras beat Mondeville, 78-60, with Lei scoring a (gasp) double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
In the matchup of undefeated rivals, Arras took on the No. 1 team and lost by just one point, 85-84. Lei had a near perfect game, shooting 7-for-8 from the field, 3-for-3 from long range and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe for 21 points. She also added three boards, eight assists and four steals. Nice, eh?
That is a wrap for this week, Libs fans. We'll be back next week to welcome in November and recap all the league action, plus the anticipated start of Euroleague play. Until then, enjoy your candy, the small break from the rain and the World Series.
