Latest on the Liberty in the offseason
by: New York Liberty
Hey Libs fans. The final week of October produced another great overseas update for our players in their off-season gigs. Can you believe it's November?
We saw the start of Euroleague action, plus our players helping to keep their clubs stay atop the standings, thanks to a handful of double-double performances.
Let's get to recapping with the assist from our video/scouting manager Catherine Proto.
Kia Vaughn's Electra Ramat Hen – currently holding the No. 1 spot (3-0) in the Israeli league standings – topped Raanana Hertzliya, 78-68. Kia led her team with 20 points and recorded her third straight double-double with 15 rebounds. The Bronx native is averaging a double-double with 15.7 ppg and 14 rpg in her rookie campaign.
- In other Israeli league action, Tiffany Jackson's Maccabi Ramat Hen is also ruling the school with a perfect record (3-0). They beat Hapoel Tel Aviv, 81-72. Tiff scored 27 points on 8 for 11 shooting, going 11 for 13 from the free-throw line and grabbing 14 rebounds. She is also hanging out in double-double territory, with 20.7 ppg and 10 rpg. Well done, ladies.
- Sidney Spencer and Gorzow tipped off Euroleague action, losing to Rivas Ecopolis, 85-60. Sid contributed seven points and four rebounds. However, Gorzow is undefeated in league play with a 7-0 record.
- Shameka Christon's Lotos Gdynia didn't fare well, either, in Euroleague play, as the Polish club was topped by Fenerbahce, 75-67. Meka had a tough outing, only scoring four points with five boards. She did bounce back a few days later in Polish league play, helping defeat TS Wisla Can Pak, 78-70, with 21 points.
She is the Polish league's third leading scorer with 20.7 ppg. Meka's team trails Sid's club with a 7-1 league record.
- Janel McCarville and Spartak got a bye in Russian league play, but they're standing strong in second place (3-0). Janel, currently ranked seventh in scoring with 14 ppg, helped her club score a 95-71 victory over Frisco Sika Brno in Euroleague play. She finished with 12 points on 5 for 7 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds.
- Cathrine Kraayeveld's USK Praha team, currently in second place (8-1) in the Czech league, reached the century mark when they defeated Hradec Kralove, 113-57. Cat, one of seven players in double figures, notched 10 points and three rebounds. She is currently averaging 5.2 rpg and is ranked second in the league in blocks with 1.7 per outing.
In Euroleague action, USK Praha took on Bourges Basket and scored a seven-point victory. Cat poured in 11 points and 12 rebounds.
- Erlana Larkins is in her second week of Turkish league action. Mersin beat Fenerbahce, 71-61, despite 11 points and seven boards from Erl.
- Leilani Mitchell's Arras is holding it down in third place in the French League (6-1). Lei helped them defeat Calais, 54-50, with nine points, two assists and five rebounds. She is the league's seventh ranking assists leader (3.7 apg).
- Coming off her best season as a pro here in New York, Essence Carson signed a contract with Bourges Basket. So she will be joining Lei in French league play soon enough.
