Dainius Zubrus will miss the next four to six weeks with a right leg injury sustained in Thursday's shootout loss at Nashville. By now, Devils fans are numb to it all.
Climbing out of a two-goal hole for the second time in nine days is a lot to ask, even for the Devils. Sluggish starts had been the norm for New Jersey despite entering Monday night's game at Philadelphia riding an eight game winning streak, which ended with the Flyers' 3-2 victory (a score not indicative of how Philadelphia controlled the game).
With Music City (alias Nashville) second on the Devils' three-game road trip Thursday night in Tennessee, the first unharmonious note in weeks is wafting through New Jersey's hockey community. The amazing nine straight road wins is now history and the trick for Jacques Lemaire and his skaters is to regroup and find the winning track from which they were derailed on Monday night in Philadelphia.
When we -- and that goes for The Maven -- think about the New Jersey Devils these days, it's impossible not to do a double-take. For starters, what are they doing atop the Eastern Conference?
Stan Fischler's new book, "WHO'S BETTER: RANGERS, DEVILS, ISLANDERS OR FLYERS?" - has just been published.
Believe me, I have hesitated to say this, but I will now, once and for all. Having covered the National Hockey League for more than a half-century, The Maven must declare that after seventeen games, the New Jersey Devils defy credulity.
I was up in Toronto over the weekend as Devils President Lou Lamoriello was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and I caught up with Lou as well as some current and former Devils to talk about the well-deserved honor.
Lou Lamoriello pulled a set of wire-rimmed glasses from his pocket with the hockey world watching Monday night, as if he was set to read from a script. The Devils' longtime general manager of 22 seasons then proceeded with his Hockey Hall of Fame induction speech, never once wearing the glasses, never once looking down at a sheet of paper.
Brian Leetch on what it means to be inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame: "It's hard to put into words what it means; it's such an overwhelming feeling. I always looked up to Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Guy Lafleur. Guys you look up to - that's the Hall of Fame.
Brian Leetch, Lou Lamoriello and John Davidson will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday and each exemplifies greatness in his own special way.
