John Wolyneic's 69th-minute equalizer gave the Red Bulls a share of the points against the Revolution, as the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Giants Stadium.
Red Bull New York announced today that head coach Juan Carlos Osorio has resigned from his position, effective immediately. The team also announced that assistant coach Richie Williams will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season. The search process for a new head coach will begin immediately.
In the midst of this Red Bulls? season on the road to nowhere, came the United States? gutsy, yet unsuccessful effort Monday against Italy in the FIFA Confederations Cup tournament being held in South Africa. Playing with 10 men after the 34th minute, the U.S. probably had fans from Milan to Sicily puzzled, as the Azzuri trailed, 1-0, in the second half, courtesy of a Landon Donovan penalty-kick goal.
The frightening thing is that this is a Red Bulls' team built to win now, but one that is currently the worst in Major League Soccer. The second half of this season is shaping up to be a long, painful one for New York.
Right now, this is the only team in professional sports that you expect to get shut out on any given day. That's the state of the Red Bulls following Thursday night's 2-0 loss to D.C. United before a national audience.
Make no mistake; the Red Bulls' six-year streak of qualifying for the playoffs is now in serious jeopardy. Saturday's 3-2 loss to Colorado saw the Bulls finish an important four-game homestand with just one win and four points out of a possible 12.
The 2009 Red Bulls are in trouble. This is the worst 11-game start in the history of a franchise that's seen more lows than highs in its 14-year existence. Two wins in 11 games, six shutouts by the opposition, and the frustrating part is that New York probably outplayed Chicago for most of the 90 sun-filled minutes at the Meadowlands Sunday.
I wish there were a few thousand more like John Wolyniec in sports. He comes to work, never complains, does his job, realizes he's blessed to do something he loves for a living and he scores big goals. Very big goals.
Red Bulls finally showing some life!
There is no way to sugarcoat a record that shows one victory after eight games played, with five of the eight matches resulting in your team being shut out. The Red Bulls are in trouble, having deployed eight different starting lineups in eight league matches thus far, with Major League Soccer's best striker a non-factor.
