Your Ultimate Boxing Fantasy
by: Tal Pinch
Even the most casual fight fan is at least vaguely familiar with Gleason's, the legendary gym that has seen some of the sport's greatest fighters lace up the gloves, including Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, and Oleg Maskaev.
Once again, the legendary Brooklyn boxing gym will be hosting its annual fantasy camp over Labor Day weekend, starting August 29th. Aside from the standard sparring and training drills, the camp also includes coaching sessions and what the Gleason's web site refers to as "intensive boxing discussions," which we first pictured as a hypothetical Louis vs. Tyson debate that eventually escalates into an all-out sparring session.
Having given it some more thought, we figure it's just a really spirited boxing tutorial. But what sets this opportunity apart from other boxing fantasies is the access to Gleason's staff. That means training courtesy of former world champions like Mark Breland, Carlos Ortiz, and Juan LaPorte.
Meals are included, but don't think this strictly a sparring experience. There is a great deal of cardio training involved, as there would be with any boxer's training regimen. That means plenty of running and swimming as early as 6:30am.
Clearly Gleason's isn't messing around here. You won't be roughing it at the old gym in Brooklyn either. The camp instead takes place at Kutsher's Country Club in the Catskill Mountains, where you'll have access to the club's sauna and health club.
Space is limited, so you'll need to reserve your spot by August 1st. Here's a video to get you pumped up.
