Could Google's Overhyped Mobile Domination Mean Trouble?

Could Google's Overhyped Mobile Domination Mean Trouble? It wasn't that long ago that Google seemed poised to take over the world. But with their stock down close to 50% this year and (gasp!) cutbacks on snacks in the cafeteria, now comes word that the mobile wagon the company had hitched itself to isn't quite the iPhone killer they hoped it would be. While word of Google's Android mobile software has been in the ether for some time, the release of HTC's G1 phone finally shows real-world proof that Google is going mobile. The conspicuous lack of gadget geeks lining up around the block (a la iPhone) made for a rough start. Same with the mixed initial reviews, which took issue with everything from G1's various apps (shut down inexplicably) to its applications store (light years behind the iPhone counterpart) to memory capacity (just 1GB compared to Apple?s 8GB). To cap it off, researchers have already found a security flaw in the G1's browser that allows malicious Trojans to install on the phone. Looking to incite a holiday mobile-phone war, HTC did manage to hedge its bets with favorable features like a dual slide-out QWERTY keyboard/touch screen and GPS chip to help you find location-specific information like weather, restaurants, and the nearest liquor store. The basic texting and calling features have also been getting positive feedback while the software has been getting the bulk of the flack. Fortunately for Google, that software is open-source and includes a growing apps store, so it could eventually catch up with consumer expectations. Until then, the iPhone's user interface and apps store will keep it ahead of the G1 by a solid country mile. We don't expect talk of a recyclable Hop-On Google phone to help in the meantime, so until the software is brought up to speed let's hope the Google cafeteria patrons can handle the cut in their basmati rice selection and Tuesday tea breaks.
